Red wigglers, or Eisenia foetida, are the best compost worms. Having these hard-working, locally-grown worms will make a huge difference to your compost--better texture and quality, more even composting, faster composting. Red wigglers are 8 times better at creating compost than the common earthworms. They can be used for your outside or inside composter bin--all seasons. $20 for a container with 200 worms (plus an extra 100 during Fall sale)--plenty to get your composter working. You will also get worm eggs to get your next generation going.

Q: Can these worms be used in a open-style compost pile?
A: Yes, but Red wigglers do better in an enclosed system. Red wigglers don't tolerate high heat, freezing temperatures or direct sunlight, so they may leave an open pile in search of a better environment. A compost bin with a cover located in shade/part-shade is ideal. Indoor or balcony compost systems are also good.
Q. Can I keep them indoors? Yes, many people keep their worm bins indoors. It may even be more desirable as there is less stress to the worms from temperature swings. A normally functioning bin has a pleasant, earthy smell.
