PABUJI KI PHAD 14 FT LONG HINDU RELIGIOUS SCROLL. obo in Victoria, British Columbia for sale

$350

OPEN TO OFFERS. This is a 20th century painting on canvas used in Hindu communities in India during traditional story telling and special ceremonies. It is approximately 4 ft. by 14 ft. and is in near mint condition. (In the accompanying photos, you will see that the tapestry is all one piece, but to accommodate it's size, I had to pin it to two walls.)
It is identical in design to one of the examples shown in the book Picture Showmen: Insights into the Narrative Tradition in Indian Art by Jyotindra Jain.
In the YouTube video To Earn our Bread ... Performing for Pabuji Preview , the lighting is not very bright, but I am sure the Pabuji Ki Phad used in this video is identical or very nearly identical in design to mine.
This type of hanging is called a 'Pabuji ki phad', a 'phad' or 'par' being the specific name for this kind of cloth, which tells the story of the Rajasthani hero Pabuji and his various exploits. Pabuji is the man in the largest of the central boxes; his black mare, another key player in the stories, is shown close to the bottom of his frame.
These painted cotton hangings are made in southern Rajasthan and are used by professional singers called bhopas to recite the story. The bhopa sings each episode while standing in front of the cloth, with the relevant section illuminated by his wife. This traditionally happens over the course of a whole night.
This is truly beautiful and I love the idea of finding someone to whom it would mean a great deal emotionally and spiritually.
