This sax gets excellent reviews
Ben Britton: "The YTS-23 is Yamaha's most basic offering in a saxophone and is meant for the beginning to intermediate player. However, that doesn't mean it isn't a serious horn. The sound and feel of blowing through the horn, especially with a proper setup, outshines some of the common competitors. Though the sound isn't as full as most pro level horns, it is balanced nicely between highs and lows. The level of resistance is at a very comfortable level and was surprisingly even throughout the horn even throughout the altissimo register. The altissimo register of the horn that I played was actually really great."
SHWoodwind: "Possibly the best 'student-quality' sax ever built... the Yamaha YTS23. Or, as I call it, The Giant Killer. The way it feels in the hands, the way it responds, the way it blows - it still delights me, even after all these years."
BestSaxoophone: "With optimum intonation and an emphasis on comfort and durability, the 23 series is perfect to help new players get a hang of their instrument."
SaxOnTheWeb: "My tech (who is a very accomplished player) plays a YTS 23 as his tenor of choice. They have all the usual Yamaha virtues - solid build, good ergos, good intonation, easy to blow with a clear flexible sound. When I'm asked by a prospective beginner what to buy I always advise 23s (or 275s if buying new). It will take even a talented student quite awhile to get to the point where the horn is holding them back (if ever)."
