Goes between rider and handlebars. I was not comfortable with the behind seat type - wanted to see my little guy while riding and he enjoyed not looking at my back all the time! It is admittedly awkward for the biker though my frame is small for me which I am sure did not help. You have to get used to it and it is not something for long trips, but we quite enjoyed it for rides of less than an hour or so. In excellent condition with all pieces and parts.
