1930s Tonk Bros. Washburn 5238 000, Brazilian w/ Calton Case in Victoria, British Columbia for sale

$6,500

These magical X-braced pre-war Washburns are really something. Elegantly yet tastefully appointed, this rare 000 example (most you see are parlor or 00 size) features solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides, adirondack top, delicate snowflake inlays, ebony fingerboard, delicate gold decal filigree and, most importantly, just huge tone. Woodiness and character, but still articulate. A quick attack, but not harsh. Thick, poweful trebles and bass that is responsive and has plenty of snap. It has just the right amount of definition, mixed with just the right amount of openness -- the convergence of these factors leads to a guitar with a stunning voice, huge volume (i am not kidding) and, thanks to the rosewood, gorgeous blossoming overtones. The condition is outstanding -- no cracks, fresh neck set and refret, original bridge and bridge plate (with thin maple overlay), and original pearl tuners (not pictured, but included in sale, along with the waverly machines that are currently on it). Original finish throughout. Neck is an ample but not huge C shape. I can say with confidence that you will not find a finer example. This was the highest end standard model in the Washburn catalog at the time of production and it shows. An very fine instrument that offers pre-war quality and tone far beyond its pricepoint.

This is a rare opportunity to own an exceptional prewar instrument -- you won't see something like this again, locally, any time soon!
