Details:
The Roberts 720 is a classic analog reel-to-reel tape recorder made in 1969 that has vacuum tube electronics.
The tape drive has three tape speeds (1-7/8 ips, 3-3/4 ips and 7-1/2 ips) and the electronics have several features that give the recordist a flexible and versatile recorder. Listening is a pleasure through outboard speakers because of its audiophile quality single-ended EL84 amplifier, and its own internal speakers are surprisingly good with most music. The Roberts 720 is noticeably quiet for a tape recorder of the 1960s because of its sophisticated power supply and unusual hum-cancellation circuitry. It gives the listener a great sense of detail, especially in the midrange, and has low overall THD, even at 1-7/8 ips. Its level meters are superior to most of its contemporaries; they have ballistics similar to Ampex professional tape decks like the 350 and 602. Therefore, recording levels can be set more precisely. The head block is better shielded than most recorders, and the wiring harness layout is clean and well-routed, reducing any tendency to pick up extraneous noise. It also provides better bass extension without losing highs, which are linear to 12 Kcps.
