VINTAGE TRAVEL POSTER CIRCA 1899 in Victoria, British Columbia for sale

$1,750

Colour lithograph travel poster by Henri Cassiers (1858-1944) Red Star Line / New York - Antwerp. Sackett & Wilhelms Litho & Ptg. Co., New York 1899. Large Format 31.5 x 43.5 Inches. B+ condition. "The Red Star Line", an American-Belgian shipping company founded in Philadelphia, 1871, had become the third largest transatlantic passenger carrier by 1906. Cassiers worked for the company over 25 years, designing their advertising posters, postcards & menus. His distinguished theme of brightly dressed peasants is clean and precise; the colours are flat and bright. This poster has never been folded and has had several edge tears professionally repaired.(see photos) The largest repaired tear extended about 4.5 inches into the center left border,is difficult to see in the photos. Small chips & creases remain around the border outside of the framing area and there are several amateur tape repairs along one edge on the back. Overall, an excellent example of early 20th century lithography and 'shipping art' by this noteable Belgian artist. It must be said that the paper used with this poster is now, somewhat fragile in its original state. Not linen backed. Every caution will be taken to ship this delicate item securely. Gentle handling and proper archival framing is recommended. Other photos available if required. Inquiries welcome.
