Artist Bio:
Distinguished Canadian artist Wayne Ngan is highly respected for many reasons. He's the first living potter to have a piece in Taiwan's National Palace Museum. He won the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award as an outstanding Canadian craftsman in 1983. Born in Canton, China in 1937, Ngan came to Vancouver at the age of 14 and struggled with language and poverty as an immigrant. Despite his family's desire for him to be a hotel keeper, he followed his creative passion and graduated from Vancouver School of Art (Now Emily Carr University of Art + Design) in ceramics in 1963. In 1969, he moved to Hornby Island, off the West Coast of British Columbia, where he fully committed his life's work to ceramics and integrated his craft with his environment.
Ngan has exhibited widely in the last 5 decades, including exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (2012), Richmond Art Gallery (2005), Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (2004), Winnipeg Art Gallery (2000), Hanart Gallery (Taipei, 1998), Royal Ontario Museum (1996), The National Palace Museum (Taipei, 1986), Presentation House Gallery (1984), Vancouver Art Gallery (1978, 1969), and National Gallery of Canada (1966).
Currently, Ngan divides his time between his three artistic pursuits - ceramics, sculpture and painting. He maintains his studio on Hornby Island and works periodically in Guangzhou
