Surprising how often unseen aircraft are nearby, and if you are between controlled areas you may not be warned by ATC (such as practice area, between airports on mainland, below terminal, etc.) Other aircraft must have transponder on and be within radar interrogation area, and although direction is not indicated, relative altitude and distance is, which is enough to get you looking outside and not at maps, etc. in the cockpit.
